Plain, chunky scrub sparrow. Common in California and parts of southern Oregon. Timing: year-round. Prefers chaparral, dry scrub, backyards and parks. Medium and stout with a conical bill; plumage is matte brown with ruddy undertail. Double-scratch forager. Split from Canyon Towhee: formerly they were known as Brown Towhee. Often uses poison oak for food and nesting. Diet includes primarily seeds, some insects, berries. Oldest wild individual recorded was 12. Population ~ 9 million.
