Default sparrow of most open areas. Very common across the US (and Canada in summer) in a wide variety of open habitat, both wet and dry. Medium-sized sparrow with stout bill, rounded head and long tail; brown above, gray below and streaked; tones variable across the range. Frequently perches up on low vegetation to sing; often gives “chimp” call when hidden. Diet mainly seeds and fruit with some insects. Usually nests in low vegetation; may have multiple clutches per year. Lifespan up to 11 years. Population ~ 130,000 and stable.
