Numerous in whole US and Canada. Timing: winter and migration; some year-round in Northwest corner of US. Prefers grassy areas with brush, backyard. Large sparrow with a conical bill; plumage is brown black white and gray. Double-scratch forager. Pairs often reunite when returning to breeding grounds. Distinct song dialects by region. Diet includes seeds, insects, grains and berries. Oldest wild individual recorded was 13. Population ~ 50 million.
